Vitamin D supplementation is required during the winter to obtain optimal vitamin D status…..why you ask?

Vitamin D is absolutely essential to support optimal bone mineralization and cellular health. Vitamin D deficiencies have been associated with increased risk of other disorders such as certain cancers, type 1 diabetes, muscle weakness and pain, pregnancy complications, and other health issues.

More importantly, vitamin D can help optimize calcium metabolism, help prevent falls and muscle weakness, help prevent osteoporosis while maintaining bone integrity, lower risk of excessive inflammation, support mood stability, especially in older persons, and many other key health topics.

Friends, this is to help you see the value vitamin D provides for you and your body, not worry you. It’s important to me to share with you why you should consider supplementing during the winter months.

A couple reasons why vitamin D is unique is because 1) very little is obtained through a normal diet, and 2) the principal source of serum vitamin D is endogenous production in the skin upon the exposure to UVB.
*Meaning when things like clouds, rain, excess clothing and other conditions reduce the amount of sunlight you’re getting, the vitamin D is reduced. It’s currently estimated that more than 1 billion people worldwide and 30 to 40% of the population between 15 and 49 years of age in the U.S. suffer from vitamin D deficiency.

Solutions:
1) When it’s warm and sunny out, take off the jacket and walk around outside for 15-30 minutes. If you don’t have 15-30 minutes there are other things we should talk about 🙂
2) Eat vitamin D rich foods: Fish/Salmon, Shittake Mushrooms
3) Supplements: Be sure to compare companies and their products. The vitamin industry isn’t regulated by the FDA so many manufacturers and products don’t meet the necessary potency, bio-availability, and quality.
